So as I mentioned in the PM, I've already got a conversation going with China regarding doing a research agreement; their idea was for them to research one thing and us to research another tonight, then tomorrow we can do research agreements so we can each get the other one's tech for cheaper. I've made overtures to Germany but no response. So my current plan-
-Research "Cause of Infection" tonight, share with China tomorrow -China will be researching "Conscription" tonight, so we can get that cheaper tomorrow
So that's $5 mil tonight plus $3 mil tomorrow to get both of those.
-If I can get another $5 million tonight I'll also research "Strategic Reserve" to help fortify us, especially helpful in case of China's friendlyness being a bluff to keep us from getting Conscription right away

Mentioned this elsewhere (and PM'ed to Sir Fabulous) but just to be sure it's all in one place-
Night 1 research- Cause of Infection Strategic Reserve

TECH RESULTS
Cause of Infection: No mechanical benefit. You now know the following information The infection is caused by a viral agent. You virologists have classified it as a Group IV virus under the Baltimore classification, identifying it as a single-strand RNA virus. This carries both good and bad news. The good news is that the disease is not caused by a retrovirus, which mutate very quickly and are typically hard to combat with modern medicine. The bad news is that RNA viruses still mutate rather quickly, and it is unlikely that a universally effective vaccine will be available for some time. Confounding this is the realization that this virus is, as far as you can tell, not related to any currently known viral infections. The virus is quite contagious, and is spread through both physical contact with the infected (casual physical contact, such as shaking hands may be enough to transmit infection), and through the air, from coughs or sneezes of infected individuals. As previously noted, the disease affects not only humans, but many other mammalian species. So far monkeys, bats, horses, and dogs are confirmed to be carriers of the disease. Rodents are suspected carriers as well. It is unknown how easily the disease transmits between species, but it is highly advised not to approach wild animals in infected areas. Domestic animals who show signs of infection should also be avoided. The virus appears to progress through three “stages” of infection. The first stage is (as with many illnesses), a carrier stage. During this stage, no symptoms are present, although infected individuals are contagious. This stage is suspected to last approximately 1 week. The second stage involves the growth of angry red rashes. These rashes are typically accompanied by lethargy, numbness in extremities, and confusion. The virus seems to attack the nervous system, starting at the extremities and working towards the Central Nervous System. After approx 2 weeks in the second stage of infection, the virus has made its way to the hind and mid-brain. In the third stage of infection, the virus wreaks havoc on these structures, causing dementia, loss of communication skills, and eventually coma. Patients can be kept alive in this state if kept in a hospital, but as yet, no patient has awoken from their coma.
Strategic Reserve Your dedication to defense has enabled you to stockpile resources and supplies at your borders without arousing any suspicions. The first time your country is attacked, you may immediately Fortify the border in the direction you are attacked from. This will not cost the normal $4 fee.

Perhaps share this info with the rest of the world?

Potentially - let's wait a bit, I was gonna trade that to China for their help with the research on Conscription, I'm not sure they'll help without a quid quo pro (and I don't necessarily want to give them Strategic Reserve)

Although I guess they'd still need to research it to go farther in the tech tree... and if we don't, someone else probably will.

We should definitely start restricting some trade with infected countries and getting our allies to do the same.

Okay I'm gonna let China know that we'll be publicizing those results and see if they'll still give us Conscription - it'll only be a $2 mil difference in our budget either way.

Also, gonna try and get that vaccine from Egypt, but since they've already got Cause of Infection I can only offer them Strategic Reserve.

I don't think it was a wise move to share our scientific findings.

Half the world probably researched Cause of Infection, so someone would have done it eventually (no way BFL wrote that in 6 minutes), keeping it quiet gains us nothing.
BTW, Germany's been negotiating with us to get some of our research (though all they had to offer was Cause of Infection so I haven't agreed yet), and in doing so described China as a "mutual enemy", though whether they have legitimate beef with China or they're just trying to make sure we share with them is anyone's guess. China, meanwhile, is still fully prepared to share research with us, so on that front at least they're still all for an alliance.

Okay since Egypt isn't getting back to me on that research agreement-
Tonight's research- Conscription, with the Research Agreement with China Personal Air Filters
I'll pm this to sirfab as well.

Conscription In these trying times, you have decided to conscript you citizens. You don’t have time to train them to a high standard, but the more fighting men and women you have, the better right? You immediately gain control of 2 additional units of Militia. These units are not placed on the world map until you decide to use them in a conflict.
Air Filters Your scientists have been hard at work constructing filters capable of eliminating the virus from the air. The work has been exceedingly frustrating. The virus is uncannily resistant to normal filtration, and the filtration systems that work are bulky and expensive. It would be far too costly to equip everybody with these systems. Right now it is practical to only give the filters out on a needed basis. You may pay $1 to equip any currently deployed military unit with the filters. Any units constructed after this technology is researched will automatically get the filters at no additional cost, as the design becomes streamlined. Any unit equipped with air filters will be greatly protected from Infection.

Does Air filters unlock anything on the tech tree?

I responded via PM, but the gist of it is: do more research on the virus and your Air Filters will unlock other things.
